Spring Flowers via All Sorts of Pretty

Fresh flowers really add so much to a space, don’t you think?  I remember one summer when I was home from college, my mom would buy flowers from the grocery store every week and arrange them among small vases to be placed throughout the house.  She always put one mini arrangement in my bathroom and I still remember how much I liked seeing it.  It was a small detail, but it made me happy.

I like the idea of having fresh flowers around all the time, but I don’t necessarily want to buy them every week.  This is a perfect example of how to use what you’ve got to make something pretty.

The trees have started blooming in my neighborhood and they are just so pretty right now that I couldn’t help but cut a couple of branches on my morning walk with my dog yesterday morning.  Don’t worry, I only cut from the back of an off the path tree so it wouldn’t be missed.

When I set them down to start working, I realized I would have to cut away a lot of flowers just to be able to get a stem in the vase, but those tiny blooms you have to sacrifice can be placed in a shallow dish with water if you just don’t have the heart to toss them (like me).

Clip as close to the main branch as possible, going all the way up until you’re sure it can clear the vase.  The rest is pretty simple – I’m no florist, so I just make it up as I go along, sticking branches in where ever feels right.  I happen to like the slightly messy, handmade look better than formal arrangements anyway.

Now I have a pretty arrangement to replace last week’s carnations that have started wilting – I put them on my bedside table because it’s a pleasant surprise to wake up to, but I may keep this one in my office so I can see it more throughout the day.

PS – this vase is at Michael’s right now.  It’s 40% off $12.99 (plus yesterday was the President’s Day sale so it was an extra 25% off – score!).  Just goes to show you, keep your eyes peeled!  You never know what might be hiding in plain sight.
