A few days ago, Instagram was abuzz with news of a really cool new app called Waterlogue that turns your photos into watercolor paintings in just seconds. I have been obsessed ever since. Here are some of my photos, all taken from my Instagram, and their watercolor counterparts.
And because I’m too lazy to do collages for all of them, the rest are just the watercolor effects. But you get the idea!
Some of them are better than others, but overall, I think this app is great! I’m really interested to have some printed out on thick watercolor paper to see if they would be realistic in person. If so, what a great an inexpensive way to get some art on your walls. I think I’ll try it and report back.
A couple of things I’ve noticed about this app: it doesn’t do people really well, like faces and hands so I wouldn’t really try to take pictures of your kids or wedding and make them watercolor because it just looks computer generated and weird. But silhouettes and more abstract poses are great. Also, the photo needs to have a lot of color, or at least not be mostly light colored for it to work well. The sketch lines are pretty artificial looking right now (maybe a future update will fix it), so if the photograph has too many light colors, the app has to rely on the sketch lines for the image to be readable and it doesn’t turn out so great.
What do you think? Have you tried this app yet? It’s $3 which is kind of a lot for an app, but then look at what it does! If you plan on actually printing out your watercolored pictures, I think it’s totally worth it.
You can download the app Waterlogue in the app store.
