Saving Mr. Banks

mary-poppins-1964-03-gDid you know that Mary Poppins was a series of books before it was a movie?  Okay, you probably knew that, but did you know that the writer of the series, P.L. Travers, actually hated the movie?  She felt they filmmakers downplayed Mary Poppin’s stern and strict nature too much, that Julie Andrews was too porcelain pretty, she absolutely hated the animated sequences, and was unimpressed with the musical numbers (all of my favorite parts!).  She was so dissatisfied with the end product that she refused to ever let Disney or anyone else use her stories to make a sequel to the film, despite Walt Disney’s efforts to persuade her later.

Saving Mr BanksThe whole tumultuous process of the making  of Mary Poppins is being made in to a movie called Saving Mr. Banks (the title makes more sense when you watch the trailer), with Tom Hanks playing Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers!  savingmrbanksI’m so excited for this film, it comes out this Christmas and we will have to see it in theaters.  Mary Poppins was one of my all time favorites growing up, I can’t imagine that movie being made any other way.  But if it had been up to Travers, the classic we all know and love would have been totally different.

Untitled-3Watch the trailer.  It looks so good!

Oh and P.L. Travers is a fascinating woman, I’ve discovered.   Believed to be bisexual, she adopted a son by herself at the age of 40 (but not his twin brother based on advice from her astrologer), and spent two years at one point on a native American Hopi Indian reservation.  I really want to read this biography about her life now!

What do you think?  Does this fascinate you as much as it does me?

Wow! I had no idea about any of that! Sounds like it will be a really interesting movie…can’t wait to see it!

Speaking of movies, I just found out about The Secret Life of Walter Mitty that’s coming out Christmas this year, with Ben Stiller as the lead. I loved the trailer, and I (albeit vaguely) remembered reading the book in middle or high school.

I don’t remember even reading that one, but I just watched the trailer out of curiosity and it looks good too!
