Inexpensive (and Large!) Art + a DIY Frame

Inexpensive Art - DIY Hanger + Caravan Shoppe ArtHave you heard of Caravan Shoppe?  They have all these digital downloads of original designs and artwork that they sell for super cheap and let you print them however you want.  I had heard about them before and always loved their concept, but the other day was my first time buying a download from them and I am so hooked.  I <3 Caravan Shoppe 4EVER!  For only $5, I downloaded the print above (available here), took it to Staples and asked for a 36″x48″ engineer print for only $7 and bam, I had art.  I posted a picture on Instagram immediately (as one does, naturally) but have since improved upon my hanging technique that I thought I would share.  (Oh and by the way, Caravan Shoppe isn’t sponsoring this post or anything, I just love them and want you to love them too!) xo2Inexpensive Art - DIY Hanger + Caravan Shoppe ArtWhen I first hung the print, I just used those double sided glue dot tape thingies (you know the ones, right?) and it was fine to satisfy my “GET IT ON THE WALL NOW” urge, but I knew it needed something a little more permanent, and that could be changed out too because let me just tell you, I plan on replacing it with more Caravan Shoppe prints as often as the wind changes.

This map print inspired images of the old school maps that would hang from the black board and the teacher would pull down to use.  So I adopted a similar concept and I’m really pleased with how it turned out.

Tools to Make Inexpensive Art - DIY Hanger + Caravan Shoppe ArtAll you really need is: thin strips of wood cut to size, paint or wood stain, tape, and twine.

IMG_3234For the wood, I went to Home Depot’s trim section in the lumber department and picked out the middle one in the picture above.  It’s only $0.84 per foot and they have a hand saw right there for you to cut the length you need at the store and you only pay for the length you need.  Perfect!

Making inexpensive art framesFrom there it’s as easy as painting your wood, taping your print to the back, and attaching the string.  I used hot glue to attach the string to the back of the wood, but I think I would have preferred a thumb tack if I had one.  Whatever you have on hand, just make it work.  You could probably just tie the twine around the wood too if you really didn’t have anything.  When you’re ready to switch it up, just take the tape off and start fresh with a new image.

Inexpensive Art - DIY Hanger + Caravan Shoppe ArtI like this much better than simply taping to the wall.  Feels  more intentional and finished.  I’d like to experiment with this idea further, staining the wood, maybe painting it a bright color, using all sorts of different art prints that I see at craft shows or on Etsy that I never buy because I don’t want the burden (i.e. cost) of framing it.  I certainly would pay to frame expensive, valuable or sentimental artwork, but for  something seasonal or trendy and inexpensive this is a great alternative.  I love that for under $20 you can have a very large piece of art for your wall and it doesn’t take a lot of time or a whole lot of creativity to put it together.

Inexpensive Art - DIY Hanger + Caravan Shoppe ArtIsn’t it pretty? The text is Latin, translating to “Fortune Favors the Brave” which seems fitting for me this year considering my new years goals.

So what do you think?  So easy a caveman could do it, right?  :)

PS – did you see the little peek of cowhide under my table in the first picture?  I just love it, I’ll be sure to post more pics soon!

How long did it take to get the print? Was it same day? Or did you have to wait? That looks awesome! I want to do the same

I downloaded it and then took it to Staples and they printed it for me while I waited. Took no time! The frame comes together pretty quickly too; the longest part is waiting for paint to dry. It’s super easy and a big impact piece for such a low cost. I love it!
